Net neutrality is under threat. Yes, you heard it right, many big us telecoms are posing threat to the net neutrality and are doing everything to take control of it. Companies and industry groups like CenturyLink, AT&T have files cases in FCC trying their might to kill the net neutrality. These groups and companies are having big phone businesses and cables operating from US. Their claim is that the utility services are not abiding with the provisions in the constitution. These telecom giants want to treat internet as a utility and want to set a standard that stops provider’s interference to the internet access.
According to the reports, FCC is going to reject such requests, adding to this they should also lead to stop such threats against Net neutrality. This stop from telecom companies is taken because they claim that their investment is going to be hampered with the more regulation added to the Web Traffic. Companies like Google and Apple have shown full support for the net neutrality. What net neutrality will do is that it will allow ISP’s to treat your every action on the internet equally. FCC chairman told that blocking of internet content is banned by open internet rules , which in result Prevent ISP’s who charge content providers for developing Fast lanes. FCC has lost the official authority for the protection of open internet.
The main reason behind the crisis over net neutrality is that, in 2002 FCC under the pressure from big telecom lobbyists failed to differentiate and assign telecommunication services and internet providers. If government fails to interfere, then open internet will be thing of the past, as it will be overtaken by new net neutrality rules. These changes can degrade the quality of content and connection of your internet. If there will be no net neutrality the ISP’s will be free to charge anything for the activities you do on internet. What’s more concerning is that Court has given no lead and explanation on the new rules, and only said that FCC point cannot be justified as they have provided incorrect legal foundation. New net neutrality rules will make internet connection similar to cable TV. If there will be no net neutrality the ISP’s will be free to block and ban content which they feel is not appropriate. More than 4 million people commented on the FCC new policies relating to net neutrality. Moreover ISP’s will have the power to control web traffic and providing high speed to favorable bidders and leave others with low speed. Without net neutrality, broadband providers can also charge extra from content providers like Netflix, Google, and Facebook, as they have large amount of users. No net neutrality will give way for high cost and slow internet speed. According to a study, US has slower speed than many industrialized nations. The current scenario is such that if net neutrality will be comprised it will hamper innovative services all over the world.
