The latest terror attack attempt may just change the way you use your beloved devices on board aircraft in the near future.

On Christmas Day last Friday, the United States experienced its first serious terrorist scare in months. On a plane originating from Yemen, headed to Detroit, Michigan by way of Amsterdam, a man attempted to detonate an explosive device, but fortunately was unsuccessful. You didn’t come here to read international headlines, however, and chances are, you already knew about this. I bring this up because, with every new terror scare/attempt/attack, there are alway new policies put into place, new regulations implemented and new limitations put on travel, all in the hopes of improving our travel safety. These new regulations may have an effect on the technology we hold oh so dear.

In the immediate wake of the attempted attack, a rule was put into effect forbidding passengers to get up or have anything on their laps during the final hour of their respective flight. Without getting off topic, I have a serious problem with this. My problem isn’t stemming from the sheer boredom I am sure will ensue (though I’m not happy about it), it is from the absolute stupidity and uselessness of this new rule. The US’s response to terror attacks is always in direct response to the attack. Take the show bomber of 2001 for example. Man tries to blow up plane with bombs in his shoes; America’s response: have all passengers remove their shoes at security for scanning. And now with this latest attempt: man tries to blow up plane in the last hour of the flight; America’s response: limit passenger activity during the last hour of the flight. Why is it that no one in the government seems to think ahead? The only way we will win this war on terror is by being three steps ahead of these animals. Plug one hole and they will just dig another. There I am done rambling off topic. I just had to get that off my chest.

Now, back to the real reason you came here: technology. What Friday’s attack demonstrated is that the bad guys will always find ways to accomplish their goals. Heck, this time they even resorted to blowing up their underpants, so clearly they are full of ideas. And with the advent of the “no moving in the last hour of the flight, no excuses” rule, the government isn’t trusting any piece of technology held by anyone (at least, during the last hour of a flight). If there is another attempt at an attack, will that mean more restrictions? As the devices our enemies use get more complex, that may mean that more electronic devices may be prohibited on airlines.

If more restrictions are put into place, this will be “ironic” in two respects. First, in-flight WiFi has just begun rolling out in fleets across the globe. If laptops become a restricted item, then WiFi signals won’t be as useful as we once hoped.

Also, one of the fastest adopted technologies this year has been e-book readers. FUN FACT ALERT: This holiday season, Amazon.com sold more e-books than actual books (according to Information Week). So yes, what I’m saying is, if we eventually phase out good old fashioned paper, we won’t even be able to read on flights! This is of course a worst-case scenario and in no way a reality. Though it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Here is my plea: To all those technology security geniuses – there IS a way to discern the bombs from the authentic everyday devices, as there is always an answer to every problem. Simply scanning for metal really is not going to cut it anymore. The world isn’t moving towards a technology-centered lifestyle, it is already there. If we are going to fully embrace that lifestyle, we need to learn how to secure it without sacrifice.

How much television do you watch? Now, how much television do you watch on your television? If you’re like me you don’t have time for such pesky things as TV schedules and minutes-long commercial breaks. In this day in age the Internet is king, and the king mandated that we the people shall get some TV whenever we want it.

As of last week, change that mandate from some to all: One the world’s largest cable service providers, Comcast, has bought NBC. You know, NBC! Aka the NATIONAL Broadcasting Company, aka the parent network of CNBC, Bravo and USA (among many others). With this merger, a big, drooling, fire-breathing, Chuck-Norrising, monster, behemoth has been born.

Comcast is the largest ISP (internet service provider) with nearly 20 million subscribers, and NBC, is well, NBC. So what’s so special about this merger? I’ll put it this way: Not only does Comcast not control the tubes that connect us all, they can control what flows through those tubes (in terms of digital entertainment).

Now, there are two camps probably forming at this point. On one side we have the “WTF Comcast?! Way to go and destroy my Net Neutrality dreams!” camp, and on the other side we have the “Woohoo! I’m so pumped because now I will have more access to all my favorite hit NBC shows like Community, The Office and 30 Rock (it’s comedy night done right, starting tonight at 8:30! Am I right NBC? That pitch was free, the next one won’t be)!

The latter camp has good reason to be excited. Today, no one pays attention to the schedules TV stations set up because God gave us things like Tivo and Hulu. When we want our entertainment, we get it. This Comcast-NBC deal will make this even more true than it already is.

Though this is exciting, I do also sympathize with the “WTF?!” camp. Comcast controlling what entertainment you consume means that it is the decider. Want to catch some Leno? No problem! “Here you go”, Comcast will say, “watch as much Jay as you want!” Now should you have the nerve to watch Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, well Comcast may very well be to say “You want Kimmel? OK. As long as you pay us, not a problem.” I think I just got a shiver down my spine, because that could be one dark future.

Having to pay to watch Jimmy Kimmel, may be a scary notion, but you could come out from under the covers for a little bit, because nothing has actually been set yet. Thankfully you live in the United States of Insanely-complex-government-system-rica, and it likely will not be another year until you actually see the full effects of this merger. There’s the FCC, the FTC, the Justice Department and who knows who else that needs to approve this merger. This merger will be a hot topic in parts of Washington over the next year, and could seriously shake up how we get our Conan in a year’s time. Speaking of Conan, check out his take on this merger in a clip from The Tonight Show!

Pioneered on iPhone®, iPod touch® and Mac® notebook trackpads, Multi-Touch allows customers to navigate using intuitive finger gestures. Instead of mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the Magic Mouse is a seamless Multi-Touch surface. Magic Mouse comes standard with the new iMac® and will be available as a Mac accessory at just $69.

“Apple is the Multi-Touch leader, pioneering the use of this innovative technology in iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpads,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Apple’s Multi-Touch technology allows us to offer an easy to use mouse in a simple and elegant design.”

Magic Mouse features a seamless touch-sensitive enclosure that allows it to be a single or multi-button mouse with advanced gesture support. Using intuitive gestures, users can easily scroll through long documents, pan across large images or swipe to move forward or backward through a collection of web pages or photos. Magic Mouse works for left or right handed users and multi-button or gesture commands can be easily configured from within System Preferences.

The Magic Mouse laser tracking engine provides a smooth, consistent experience across more surfaces than a traditional optical tracking system. Magic Mouse uses Bluetooth wireless capabilities to create a clean, cable-free desk top and its secure wireless connection works from up to 10 meters away. To extend battery performance, Magic Mouse includes an advanced power management system that works with Mac OS® X to automatically switch to low power modes during periods of inactivity. The new iMac line, starting at $1,199, is the fastest ever with Intel Core 2 Duo processors starting at 3.06 GHz, and Core i5 and i7 quad-core processors for up to twice the performance.* Every new iMac ships with a wireless keyboard and the all new wireless Magic Mouse, the world’s first mouse with Multi-Touch™ technology pioneered by Apple on the iPhone®, iPod touch® and Mac® notebook trackpad.

“The iMac is widely praised as the best desktop computer in the world and today we are making it even better,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With brilliant LED displays and the revolutionary Magic Mouse, the new iMac delivers an amazing desktop experience that we think customers will love.”

The new iMac features stunning LED-backlit displays with a 16:9 aspect ratio, ideal for watching high definition movies and TV shows from iTunes®, or editing and watching your own videos or photos using iLife®. The new 21.5-inch iMac features a high resolution 1920-by-1080 pixel display. The 27-inch iMac features a beautiful 2560-by-1440 pixel display that offers 60 percent more pixels than the previous 24-inch model. Both 21.5 and 27-inch displays use IPS technology to deliver consistent color across an ultra wide 178 degree viewing angle.

The iMac comes standard with a wireless keyboard and the new Magic Mouse featuring Apple’s revolutionary Multi-Touch technology. Instead of needing mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the Magic Mouse is a seamless Multi-Touch surface. Using intuitive gestures, a user can easily scroll through long documents, pan across large images or swipe to move forward or backward through a collection of web pages or photos. The Magic Mouse can be configured as either a single button or two button mouse, according to the user’s preference. The wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse work seamlessly with the iMac’s built-in Bluetooth capabilities to provide a clean, cable-free desk top.

The iMac features improved graphics across the line with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics or ATI Radeon HD 4670 discrete graphics in the 21.5-inch model, and ATI Radeon HD 4670 discrete graphics or ATI Radeon HD 4850 discrete graphics in the 27-inch model. The new iMac line now also features 4GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory and capacity up to 16GB across four SO-DIMM slots. Every iMac features a built-in iSight® video camera, mic and stereo speakers integrated into the thin aluminum and glass design. iMac includes built-in AirPort Extreme® 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a total of four USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire® 800 port and a new built-in SD card slot.

Apple today also announced that the Mac mini, the world’s most energy efficient desktop,** is now faster, offers more storage and comes standard with double the memory. Starting at $599, the entry level Mac mini features a faster 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, a 160GB hard drive, five USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 800, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics and a SuperDrive®. The $799 Mac mini features a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory and a larger 320GB hard drive. Apple now offers a $999 Mac mini that is specially configured with Mac OS® X Snow Leopard® Server. Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server features two 500GB hard drives for a total of 1TB of server storage in the tiny 6.5-inch square by 2-inch tall Mac mini enclosure.

Continuing Apple’s commitment to the environment, both iMac and Mac mini extend their leadership in green design. iMac and Mac mini meet the new, more stringent Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieve EPEAT Gold status.*** The new iMac now features LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. Both iMac and Mac mini use PVC-free internal components and cables, contain no brominated flame retardants, use highly recyclable materials, and feature material-efficient system and packaging designs.

Every Mac comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the world’s most advanced operating system, and iLife, Apple’s innovative suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. iLife features iPhoto®, to easily organize and manage photos; iMovie® with powerful easy-to-use new features such as Precision Editor, video stabilization and advanced drag and drop; and GarageBand® which introduces a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar.

The new iPod nano comes in 8GB and 16GB models, each of which incorporates a video camera and microphone on the back of the unit, as well as a built-in speaker. The video camera shoots H.264 VGA video—640 by 480 pixels—at up to 30 frames per second with AAC audio in either portrait or landscape modes. It also features 15 special effects that can be applied in real time: Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido, Motion Blur, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch, and Twirl. The nano can display video or sync it back to your computer, where you can easily upload the clip to YouTube, Facebook, MobileMe, or share it via e-mail. The microphone can also be used with the nano’s voice recording feature.

In addition, the nano now has VoiceOver support, which provides audible navigation cues in 20 languages, and the new Genius Mixes feature, which creates up to 12 endless playlists of music based on your existing library. There’s also a built-in pedometer which can measure your steps and sync the information with the Nike+ service and, in a first for an iPod, an FM radio tuner. The radio tuner includes support for live pause, which allows users to pause a live program and resume it later, and iTunes Tagging, which lets listeners tag radio songs they like and then preview and optionally purchase the song next time they sync with iTunes.

Other than the camera, the physical form factor of the nano remains mostly unchanged, although it now features a larger 2.2-inch, 240-by-376-pixel, display and comes in nine colors: silver, black, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, (PRODUCT) RED and pink. The 8GB model runs for $149 and the 16GB for $179 (a discount from the previous nano, which cost $199). Both new models are shipping today.

The new nano requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later as well as iTunes 9. iPhoto 6.0.6 or later is recommended for Tiger users and iPhoto ’09 for Leopard or Snow Leopard users. Windows users need Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later as well as iTunes 9.
