Skype Comes to iPhone Sooner, to Blackberry Later.

The official Skype app will be in the Apple App Store Tomorrow, March 31st, and Blackberry users can expect to see one around May of this year.

The iPhone’s Skype feature set includes free Skype to Skype calls, SkypeOut support, a pretty interface that is keeping with the iPhone interface, and instant messaging. You can also take a picture from within the app, and accept conference calls.  The app will also work on 2G  iPod Touches that have the external mic.

Caveats are:  only being able to use on a wi-fi connection, as there is a ban on any VoIP on a 3G network, no text messaging, file transfer, or access to your Skype voicemails.

I’ve been using the Fring app for a while now, and it’s a great multi-protocol client that supports talk, chat, and Skype already….jus sayin.

I’ve been using IM+ for Skype from Shape Services on my BlackBerry (both 8830 and Storm), and have been pretty happy with it.

In my opinion, the Skype or some type of “PC to PC” software for phones like the iPhone and Blackberry, so on so on, would be beneficial.

It would help clear up traditional phone traffic. We could simply just use the internet bandwidth, which for calls?.. only takes up what? 5KB? A dial up user could benefit from this change. although it may not be the “best” quality at all times, it would still be useful.

And for cell phones only: It would lower costs for people who can’t afford to have a 1,000+ minutes contract.

It’s already showing that traffic is quite high with phone “numbers” – As when you get a home line or cell phone that you receive a call at least the first month with, “Hello, is Uncle Lu there?” – Number cycling.

@Will – What up! I’ve used IM+ on my iPod touch and I’m a big fan of it’s IM services, I knew there was another app besides Fring that was utilizing Skype. I’ve been meaning to get one of those mic extensions for my headphones so that I can test out the VoIP w/ my Ipod Touch.

@Snick – I totes agree, that VoiP is truly beneficial. Whenever my best friend’s band goes on tour, half the year they are in Europe, and we would Skype all the time. It wasn’t the best quality for sure, but minutes overseas are really spendy, so whenever he got internet service at hotels, he’d use it to Skype call me.
I don’t actually talk on the phone that much (surprisingly, being the mobile expert. I’m addicted to texting) and when I do, I’m usually at home, so VoIP really does appeal to me. Especially if I can get it on my iPod Touch, it would probably save me some dough.

Thanks for reading and commenting! Keep it coming!

For international calls, I lean on Vonage.

To the UK? $15/month Unlimited :) and a UK home line number for only $5/month extra.

It’s the perfect solution, and way cheaper than traditional landlines.

For all the cool features that VoiP offers (take your phone with you!!!), the bill is $36/month compared to with LESS features on Verizon, $70+/month.

    Go VoiP :D

Snick, you definitely got the game down. That is such a huge difference in cost. I wonder how long it will be before landlines will be obsolete for the regular consumer.

I also give T-Mo props for incorporating VoIP into some of their phones with their @home package.

also…with Skype now available on mobile handsets, I wonder what will become of their mobile Skype handsets they came out with last year. They were totally cute, but did they app themselves out of that market?

    Definitely go VoIP!
