Black Widow External USB Hard Drive Dock by Thermaltake
Well there are a ton of gadgets out there that are cool and sleek and will make you want them for the status you will gain with your chums. Those gadgets are great. I have even succumbed to the relentless marketing and purchased one or five of them myself. The device that I am posting about is not of that camp. It is actually affordable and, brace yourself…, useful.
The Black Widow USB hard drive dock by Thermaltake is a way to easily connect 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA internal hard drives to a computer with a USB or eSATA port. All you have to do is connect the dock to a power source and your computer and you can connect any internal SATA drive as if it were an external drive. You are able to hot swap the drives and move data at either USB 2.0 transfer speeds or eSATA on the upgraded model. The cost of external storage is higher than internal. This is because it comes with the case and all the innards that allow it to connect to your computer. What this device does is allows you to provide as much storage as you want while keeping the innards static. This is especially useful if you are performing periodic backups to be moved of site. Your only cost is the hard drive.
There are cheaper and clunkier ways to make this happen. You don’t have to have this device to get the same result but this is the easiest and most user friendly way to mount internal drives quickly. So if you are tired of taking the screws out of your case to hook up a drive to pull one file off it or if you are tired of other solutions that are little more than a mess of cords then you need to give this product a serious look. Aside from the ridiculous name and the “PC Gaming” badge on the box I can’t find any faults in this product.

I’ve actaully used one of thesequite a bit, we have them at work for when we need to transfer data from a customer’s old PC to a new PC, and they’re pretty good.
There are other options out there, but the TT Black Widow is possikbly the best of the bunch.
The only thing that I woulld have liked to have seen though, is the addition of EIDE rather than just SATA – but since this product is really geared more towards enthusiasts I am not surprised at the choice of SATA only, plus manfacturing costs for adding EIDE would have put this product into too high a price bracket to make it appeal.

I was able to mount my old PC's internal hard drive and see its contents but I can't do anything with them (files and folders). Can't open them or move them out of the HD where I can open them, etc. The message doesn't give any clues, just says “operation can't be performed” or something similar (now disconnected and back in its box).
I'm guesing the reason may be this was a shared PC (wife, son and myself), me being the administrator with an access password I don't even remember now.
Best Buy wants to charge 3 times the price of the dock to recover the data for me.
This can't be so hard?! If a good soul out there has the key or can help, please reply. Need to get back to work and complete my work portfolio (some material trapped within old hard drive).

oh swell….that’s why i bought this thing too. just hooking it up and no instructions on these cables. bought it to get files off a crashed computer. we’ll see what happens i guess.

Great idea. The eSATA connection would be a deal maker for me. It’s much quicker for transfering larger file (Blu-ray movies, ISOs)
